Urinary Incontinence & Sexual Dysfunction

Urinary incontinence is a common condition that affects many people in Malaysia, both men and women. This condition is defined as the involuntary loss of urine that can lead to a range of physical, psychological, and social problems. Urinary incontinence can occur due to various factors, such as pregnancy, childbirth, aging, obesity, neurological diseases, and certain medications.
In Malaysia, urinary incontinence is a prevalent health issue that affects the quality of life of many individuals. According to a study published in the Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences, the prevalence of urinary incontinence among Malaysian women aged 18 to 70 years is around 35.5%. This study also found that the prevalence of urinary incontinence increases with age and parity.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

Stress incontinence is the most common type and occurs when there is a sudden increase in abdominal pressure, such as during coughing, sneezing, or exercise.
Urge incontinence, on the other hand, is characterized by a sudden urge to urinate, followed by involuntary loss of urine.
Overflow incontinence occurs when the bladder is full but cannot empty completely, resulting in continuous leakage of small amounts of urine.
Mixed incontinence is a combination of stress and urge incontinence, while functional incontinence occurs due to physical or cognitive impairments that prevent an individual from reaching the toilet in time.
Functional incontinence can vary and may include physical disabilities, cognitive impairments, medication side effects, or environmental factors such as lack of access to a bathroom or difficulty using one due to obstacles or inaccessible facilities.
Caffeine, alcohol and artificial sweeteners in diet sodas work as diuretics—in other words, they cause the body to produce more urine—and also make bladder issues worse.
