Pigmentation & Uneven Skin Tone

Skin pigmentation is a common condition that affects many people. It occurs when the skin produces too much or too little melanin, which is the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes. When melanin production is disrupted, it can result in uneven skin tone, dark spots, and other pigmentation problems.

Where are
melanocytes located?

The color of our skin is determined by melanocytes, a type of cell located in the outer layer of our skin that produces pigments known as melanin. However, when our skin cells are damaged or become unhealthy, it can lead to an overproduction of melanin, resulting in skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation, such as dark patches.

Common causes of this include direct exposure to sunlight, skin injury, inflammation, hormonal changes, and aging.

These melanocytes are located in the basal layer of cells, which is the deepest part of the epidermis.

You just can’t leave home without spraying your favorite perfume? Think again because perfume can also turn your skin a shade darker. Perfumes tend to make the skin more sensitive to sun rays thereby promoting discoloration.

FAQ

Must a laser be used to remove pigmentation or uneven skin tone?
While in general there are many different approaches in treating pigmentation and uneven skin tone, laser treatments (such as Pigment Lasers and Ablative Resurfacing Lasers) are considered some of the most effective treatments for reducing and removing skin pigmentation.

  • Pigment Lasers can penetrate into different layers of the skin. It removes the pigments beneath the skin. This approach also stimulates collagen growth over time, resulting in better skin tone and texture. It's a less aggressive approach than an ablative laser and has a shorter recovery time.
  • Ablative Resurfacing Lasers are able to remove the thin outer layer of skin (epidermis) and heats the underlying skin (dermis), which stimulates the growth of collagen — a protein that improves skin firmness and texture. As the epidermis heals and regrows, the treated area will appear smoother and tighter.
Is there any alternative treatment besides laser that can be used to even out our skin tone?
Discover Exion—an innovative solution for achieving a harmonious skin tone. Using advanced radiofrequency and targeted ultrasound, Exion addresses hyperpigmentation, sunspots, and age spots without lasers or invasive procedures. This groundbreaking approach stimulates dermal fibroblasts, enhancing Hyaluronic Acid production, improving skin laxity, and promoting overall skin health. Experience minimal downtime and a pain-free journey toward a radiant complexion.
Can discoloured skin pigmentation be removed completely from the skin?
There are numerous treatments available to remove existing pigmentation, but they may not be permanent. At Revival Medical Clinic, we emphasise prevention, and to keep pigmentation at bay in the long run, some 'maintenance' is required. Because we are all unique, the nature of our pigmentation will differ. While having a general guide to treatment, UV protection, and pigment-inhibiting skincare is beneficial, our professional doctor will assist you in understanding the nature of your skin and advising you on the best maintenance plan for you.
